What's so great about these records?
I used to think that Louis’ marriage record was the oldest record in Missouri for this family. It is not. But it is interesting, since his parents and his birth place are identified. (If a person new to the community was married, the record often provided his place of origin.)

Here we have a lesson about checking information. The typewritten transcription of the marriage record gives his place of birth. But when I tried to find it on the map of France, I could not. So, I read again the original marriage record. And I think it says “Diocese of Lisieux,” not “Lesceuse.” Always look at the original!

(List of witnesses is on 779. It is very difficult to read, but one can see that Military and Civil important men were present.)

1840 Census

In the 1840 census only the head of the household is named. Everyone else is a number in one of the columns. You can tell from this record that Louis was old and living with some younger family members. He had no slaves. (The census taker spelled his name “Lewis Overy.”)
