Facts (with source information): Narrative Report

What's so great about these records?
Look at the 1880 census record, in which he is a newlywed. He says that his occupation is “brickmaker.” And other people on the page say the same thing. When we investigated, we found interesting articles about the Hydraulic-Press Brick Company of St. Louis, which was the world’s largest maker of bricks. When you see all those old red brick homes, churches, and civic buildings, think of Bernard Spies.

1861 Baptism

St. Ferdinand, Florissant, Missouri

1880 Marriage

August 8, 1880
St. Kevin, St. Louis, Missouri
left side, 2nd entry

Note the name of the bride’s mother. It is Tiebo. That is one of the many variant spellings of her name, Thebeau, which is a French name. You will see it in other records as Thibeau, Thibault, Tebo …

1923 Death Certificate

Informant is his son, William O. Spies. Sadly, William does not know (or perhaps wasn’t asked) the names of his father’s parents. This is common on death certificates, that the informants don’t know basic facts or get the information wrong.
