Facts (with source information): Narrative Report

What's so great about these records?
These records are not as complete and correct as we would like. However, from the point of view of a family historian, we have proof of her relationship with her parents and of her relationship with her husband. The marriage record from St. Nicholas is the most important document we have found.

Chart

Primary Records:

I do so wish I could find her baptism record, but so far have failed. I found baptism records for her four younger brothers at St. Nicholas. But there is no record there for Helena.

The marriage record from St. Nicholas is proof of her relationship with her parents as well as her relationship with her husband.

This record is a treasure to genealogists. It names their parents. Of course, it is written in Latin, so you have to figure out what the names would be in German or English.

1952 Death Certificate

The informant is her son Fred Preis.

Census Records

The 1890 census was lost in a fire. 1940 is the most recent census that is public.

Now you will see why the census is only a secondary source. Her name was Helena. She was called Lena. She was born in Missouri, not in Hanover. My guess is that the family spoke German and the census taker did not in 1870 and in 1880.
