What's so less-than-wonderful about these records?
There are no primary records to prove that James is the son of John Dove and Lucy Covalt. There are two old books that identify his parents, however, and the census records of Fountain County, Indiana are in agreement with those books. So we have evidence but not proof of his lineage.

This paragraph is the beginning of the biography of David Dove, which was published during his lifetime in a book about Fountain County, Indiana. David says that his grandfather, John Dove, came from Ohio to Fountain County with most of his family. David names his father, Abraham Dove. He also names all Abraham’s siblings, among them James Dove. Can we rely upon David’s testimony? The census records shown below suggest that David is correct when he describes his family tree.
