Marguerite Montreuil (1813-1852)
She was the wife of Francois Thebeau and great great grandmother of William Spies. Her grandfather Francois Marechal is a DAR patriot, recognized for having defended St. Louis during the only attack that British forces made there during the revolutionary period.
Marguerite Montreuil’s tombstone displays her maiden name. That’s very unusual, but perfectly compatible with the French Catholic records of her community. Whenever women are mentioned, their maiden names are used. So, Marguerite’s burial record says “Marguerite Montreuil, wife to Francois Thebeau.” This custom is so helpful for family historians. Daughters do not get lost in the data, and marital relationships are well-documented.
