Many of these veterans were part of the Enrolled Missouri Militia, an organization that performed garrison duty and local policing. The situation in Missouri was that numbers of Confederate recruiters and marauders roamed the countryside. The militia was needed so that more seasoned troops could pursue the terrorists.
All these men served on the Union side, and all survived the war. The dates are death dates. The longest-surviving veteran lived until 1924.
